Crowned the first Miss South Africa of the new millennium, Jo-Ann Strauss has become a household name as an international master of ceremonies, successful businesswoman and ambassador for Audi. Between TV and red carpet invites LEGiT hooked up with the mover and shaker to find out how she goes about dressing for the part.
Describe your personal style.
I like to think of myself as an elegant, but quirky fashionista. I enjoy adopting trends, but don't slavishly follow them. I love looking effortless, though we all know that an effortless look usually requires quite some effort ;-)
What’s your number one tip for on-trend style?
Don’t copy what you see in the magazines piece by piece. Have fun with fashion, but always try to be comfortable and confident. The best accessory for any season is a confident smile.
What’s your favourite occasion to dress up for?
I love dressing up for horse races – like the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. Everyone has to wear blue and white, so it’s always interesting to see how you can stand out whilst adhering to the dress code. One of my pet peeves is when people ignore dress codes!
What’s your number one summer 2012 essential?
Neon nail polish and accessories!
Who’s your favourite male celeb when it comes to style?
Johnny Depp – he looks like he’s not trying too hard and always has some interesting elements in what he wears. Sometimes though, he looks like he could do with a bath!
Who’s your favourite designer?
Locally, Gideon who is based in Durban and Kluk CGDT in Cape Town. Internationally, I love BCBG Maxazria.
Wedge heels or stilettos?
Both!
What is your most treasured fashion item?
My wedding dresses – they are so beautifully made and I’ll always treasure them!
Do you have an item in the back of your wardrobe that you’ll never wear?
Yes, not until I figure out how to wear it and after five years, no one has been able to help! It’s a white shirt-dress from the conceptual Japanese designer, Yohji Yamamoto and it’s a puzzle. It was a gift from the runway show.
What are your first-date wardrobe staples?
Crisp white shirt and great fitting denims
Which items make a fantastic first impression?
Great shoes!
