Colour block vs Monochrome

Monochrome vs Colour block - Fashion trends - LEGiTimate Fashion

We’re loving the monochromatic trend that’s inspired us all to wear jumpsuits in solid tones and top-to-toe monochrome outfits. It’s a contrast to the colour blocking trend that burst onto the runway a year ago and it gives a whole new dimension to your wardrobe.

Being able to rock one hot shade from head to toe can make a stunning style statement and there’s no better way to give your ensemble a sleek look. So: colour blocking vs monochrome? Which is better for you? And is there any perfect occasion for both?

Conventional wisdom would tell you that when you’re feeling washed out, pepping an outfit up with more colour is the best approach. But wearing just one bright shade from head to toe (think jumpsuit or a shift maxi dress) is a great way to give your body a sleek look with a definitive colour that’ll bring out the tones in your skin.

Colour blocking is perfect for experimenting – play around with mismatched shades for that summertime party on the beach or for any daytime outing that’ll put you outside. The look is fresh and it has a casual glamour that’s perfectly suited to summer style.

The monochrome trend works well for glossing over those curves you’re just a little self-conscious of. If you’re short, try a midi skirt that’ll lengthen your legs, with a matching top that’ll give you a chic look.

And if you’re looking to rock your curves proudly? Go all out in colour that can emphasise those parts of your body you love to show off. Monochromatic outfits, even tight ones, will naturally make all the sections of your body look more or less the same size, so if you’re looking to draw attention to one, do it with colour.

A great way to change up your work wardrobe is by keeping a sophisticated, top-to-toe look and just changing the colour. Try a bright blue, sleek jumpsuit, or maxi dresses with a matching blazer. Monochrome doesn’t have to be so rigid either. Choose a single colour palette with a little variation and build an outfit from it – think dark green skinnies with a lime top and mint green cardigan – for a look that stays sleek without making you look too samey.

You can also colour block with muted colours for a pastel colour blocking style that’ll be more suited to the cooler season.

Want to tone up your monochrome? Try wearing items with a little texture, like Oriental prints or floral textures, that don't add any colour for a little extra dose of chic.
