Fashion is seasonal, but style is forever. We show you how to rock the five autumn basics every fashionista's wardrobe needs.?
Summer had to end sometime and it looks like it may finally be time to start packing away your sandals and mini dresses in favour of fashion with a little more coverage. But even though seasons change, style is forever. Cooler weather doesn’t have to mean skimping on glamour; it just means a few slight adjustments to your wardrobe.
Leggings and tights are an absolute must for any autumn wardrobe. They’re the perfect light layer for wearing under tunics and short dresses so you can keep your favourite miniskirt going for months without freezing. For a more daring take, wear leggings and tights in bolder colours instead of sticking to black.
Fitted midi skirts, tunics and T-shirt dresses are perfect for wearing with leggings and you can pair them up with heels, brogues, ballet pumps or boots, depending on your style.
You can rock shorts and mini skirts all year round, plus with the coloured hosiery trend that's in this season, it'll also add a colour blocking touch to your wardrobe. Be sophisticated with neutral shorts or mini skirts over charcoal or black tights, or mix it up with colour - sheer tights in bright colours are completely in style if you're daring.
The most important aspect of your autumn wardrobe is layering. Go for lots of light layers for a stylish look that’ll keep you warm without looking frumpy. Light weight ponchos, cosy light knits or long sleeved T-shirts can be mixed and matched. They are also the perfect solution for an ensemble that’s on trend and will add colour to your look without making you look heavy.
For a warm texture that’s always on trend, be playful with pieces like gilets and hoodies that have faux fur lining. Animal print is also a great on trend print for autumn and makes for great accents on neutrals. For the ultimate layer this season, go for thick, longer length waterfall cardigans. These are not only warm, they also provide a great flowing line to smooth over any unwanted curves and are the perfect basic for complementing a bright top or skirt.
Combat boots are chic this season, so rock out in a pair with some feminine print detail or a classic pair in matte texture. You can also go for a pair with a slightly distressed look, for that vintage, 'had them forever' look. Of course, boots are an autumn/winter staple and there's a style to suit every style star, from ultra-comfortable and flat riding boots, to stiletto heeled thigh high boots for the more daring stylista.
The colour palette for this season isn’t quite as bold as summer, but there’s still enough colour to keep your autumn wardrobe looking vibrant. Look for deep rich tones like deep purple, mustard yellow or forest green and bright tones of red and teal.
Autumn also means more accessories to play with, so stock up on stylish printed scarves and snoods and don’t forget to add a beret or two to your wardrobe, to top off a classy, slightly cooler look.
