Hot handbags Autumn 2012fashion

Handbags and purses are an essential part of your wardrobe – in essence they’re the wardrobe item you’ll wear most often, that can go with multiple outfits.

The dizzying selection of handbags you’re likely to find in-store can be a blessing – there’s bound to be one that you'll fancy – but it can also be hard to decide what kind to look for. Added to that are the undeniable oscillations in handbag trends that render some styles dated in little more than a few months.

If you’re looking for a style that’s seasonally appropriate, look no further than a cross body satchel. Typically found with a long, slim strap, these firm, boxy bags are a perfect structured addition to your wardrobe. You can find them with colour accents, too, which can enhance your wardrobe greatly.

If you’re more interested in utility and need to carry a large amount, try a tote bag. Adapted from minimalist shopper bags, this sizeable handbag style is large enough to be a strong statement piece and can be incredibly useful. Try a bag with a contrasting strap and if you’re not into solid colours, get a printed tote or a colour block tote broken up with more than one colour.

The large, flat clutch is the ultimate evening handbag option for this season. You can go for a slouchier style that can be held in your hand or slung over your shoulder, or go for a firm, briefcase like style that can be held casually at your side. Either way, it’s time to put away your small clutch this season and go big with clutches in the style of envelopes and folders.

For an in-between sized bag with a lot of utility and style, go for a hobo shoulder bag in distressed leather styles. This style can be taken anywhere and the soft nature of the material will blend to your body and your outfit. You can get hobos with a wide variety of trim and embellishment so don’t be afraid to experiment with colour either.

Style tip: want to jazz up a plain handbag? Lay your bag flat, map out patterns with masking tape and apply different nail polish colours to them. You can add a metallic strip or create patterns on the back for a personalised style that no one would have thought of. Nail polish blends into leather and patent leather styles, making it look completely natural. And if you mess it up just a little? Simply apply nail polish remover before the stain’s had a chance to set.
