Thanks to a wicked, rather addictive brew of soul, reggae, R&B, jazz, rock, hip hop and incredible live stage presence, Simphiwe Kulla, Mthabisi Sibanda, Gregory Mabusela, Karabo Moeketsi and Sifiso Buthelezi are fast becoming more than just flavour-of-the-month favourites, collectively they’re The Muffinz. Hot on the heels of the release of their debut album, Have You Heard? LEGiT caught up with four members of the five-piece band and quizzed the guys to see if their beats are as powerful as their fashion statements.
What is the most important style item in your wardrobe?
Karabo: My denims.
Gregory: My flat sneakers.
Mthabisi: My T-shirts!
Simphiwe: My skinny ties and denims.
Do you talk fashion with guy friends?
Karabo: Yes definitely! Looking good is part of what we want for ourselves.
Gregory: No, we chat about music.
Mthabisi: We talk about the latest guitars and instruments yes, but as far as fashion… we have that discussion frequently, as much as we discuss quantum physics (LOL).
Simphiwe: Yeah with some guys I do. Not all of them. Fashion is not a big topic with us.
What is your staple outfit for a first date?
Karabo: It depends on the date, but I'd have to say looking and feeling good is the basis of every look.
Gregory: My casual top and chinos!
Mthabisi: Denims, shirt and shoes (preferably loafers).
Simphiwe: Golf shirt, denims and my All Star sneakers, very chilled.
What is the best women’s fashion item you’ve ever seen?
Karabo: It will have to be skinny denims by far.
Gregory: Leggings!
Mthabisi: Miniskirts and leggings… don't ask why.
Simphiwe: Skinny denims, leggings and pencil skirts. I don’t think these items make women look pretty, I think it makes them look HOT!
Which male celebrity’s style do you like?
Karabo: There is none that come to mind, but I could say I like certain looks from different guys.
Gregory: John Legend.
Mthabisi: Johnny Depp is king, ever cool and never over the top.
Simphiwe: Brad Pitt, he pulls off a rugged look and yet at the same time, he cleans up pretty good as well.
What’s your ideal holiday destination?
Karabo: There are quite a number of them… Italy, Rome, tropical islands etc.
Gregory: Paris.
Mthabisi: New York City.
Simphiwe: It has to be Italy.
Do you wear skinny denims?
Karabo: Wasn't a fan at first, but now I'm loving them!
Gregory?: I rock my skinnies hard!
Mthabisi: Yes, but I always wear a size bigger. Need room for the thighs!
Simphiwe: Yeah, I rock skinnies hard
Loafers or sneakers?
Karabo: Sneakers.
Gregory?: Sneakers.
Mthabisi: Loafers.
Simphiwe: Sneakers
Are there any clothes in your wardrobe that you never wear?
Karabo: Yes, some items of clothing aren't in fashion any longer.
Gregory: I wear everything that's in my wardrobe!
Mthabisi: Yes… bootleg denims!
Simphiwe: No, I give them away.
Guys wearing make-up… what’s your take?
Karabo: Hmmm, no issues with it as long as it's done moderately. Like for scars and such things.
Gregory?: If you are an actor on set and it’s for the camera, then it’s cool.
Mthabisi: If women wear weaves, then guys can wear make-up. It’s not for me though.
Simphiwe: No no no! You can't be wearing make-up as a man.
What’s your top item for impressing a date?
Karabo: Can't reveal my secret weapons now … can I?
Gregory?: A slim fit shirt.
Mthabisi: I know that most women don't like overkill, so I always dress to make sure I don't look too bland, but also not over the top.
Simphiwe: My smile.
